What is Vision Therapy?
Vision Therapy is a series of supervised, prescribed eye exercises that treat vision problems that are not corrected by glasses or contact lenses. Each program is designed around the specific needs of each patient. A vision therapy program can be used to help with many common vision problems, including:
Depth-perception problems
Lazy or crossed eyes
Double vision issues
Eye tracking or focusing problems
Certain reading disabilities
Vision problems caused by traumatic brain injuries or strokes
Sports vision problems
How is the Vision Therapy program structured?
Patient's interested in the Vision Therapy program will first perform a Vision Therapy evaluation. The evaluation will consist of special testing that will help your optometrist create an individualized treatment plan.
Vision Therapy sessions are once a week in-office for about 30-60 minutes. Your eyecare provider will create an individualized plan that will include take-home assignments.
Vision Therapy and Learning Problems
Any child with reading or learning disabilities should have a comprehensive eye exam to test for vision problems. In cases where the learning problem is vision-related, vision therapy may be a part of the treatment program.
Some of the signs that your child may have a vision problem include:
Complaints of headaches or their eyes hurting
Short attention span when performing visual tasks
Squinting, tilting their head, or closing one eye during visual tasks
Problems remembering words or images
Quality of Life Survey
This free online survey will help you determine if a vision condition is affecting your quality of life. When filling out this survey, please select the choice that best describes how often you experience each symptom. When answering for a child, please ask each symptom as a question. If the child responds with “yes”, please ask “how often?” and answer accordingly.
