BlephEx Overview
BlephEx is a painless in-office procedure performed by your eyecare professional or trained technician. The patented BlephEx handpiece is used to very precisely and carefully, spin a medical grade micro-sponge along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing biofilm scurf and debris and exfoliating your eyelids.
The Details
This 10 minute in-office procedure is recommended for the treatment dry eyes when blepharitis is present. Blepharitis is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the eyelids caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria living along the lid and the base of the eyelashes. This overgrowth of bacteria is called biofilm. Similar to plaque on your teeth, biofilm cannot be removed with at home therapies. BlephEx effectively removes bacterial biofilm from the surface of the lid margin and glands that aid in the production of your natural tears. By eliminating the inflammatory etiology of dry eye disease and blepharitis, the overall health of the eyelid is improved. BlephEx treatments need to be repeated at regular intervals depending on severity of the disease, just like your dentist removes plaque during a routine teeth cleaning visit. How diligent you are with your at home therapies play a strong role in determining how often this treatment needs to be performed.
